What a pool barrier inspection covers

A compliance inspection isn't about your pool's water quality, pump or filtration — it's specifically about the physical barrier that stops unsupervised access, particularly by young children. Your inspector will assess the entire barrier as one connected system, including:

• Barrier height — a minimum of 1200mm above ground level on the outside of the fence, measured at the current ground level rather than however it was when the fence was built.
• Gaps — under the fence, between pickets, and anywhere a small child could squeeze through or find a foothold.
• The non-climbable zone — the clear area required around the outside of the barrier, free of pot plants, furniture, garden features or anything else that could be used to climb over.
• Gates — every gate providing access to the pool area needs to self-close and self-latch reliably from any open position, without being pushed shut.

It's a hands-on, physical inspection. Your inspector walks the full perimeter, measures height and gaps at multiple points, and physically tests every gate — not a desktop review of old paperwork or plans.

The four-year re-inspection cycle

A passed inspection isn't a one-off event. Every registered pool and spa barrier in Victoria needs to be re-inspected and re-certified every four years, indefinitely, regardless of how old the pool is or how long the barrier has stood without issue. This isn't red tape for its own sake — barriers drift out of compliance for entirely ordinary reasons: ground levels shift with landscaping, gate hardware wears with age and weather, and established gardens grow into the non-climbable zone over time. The four-year cycle exists because these changes are gradual and easy to miss without a dedicated physical re-inspection.

It includes the physical inspection and your Form 23 Certificate of Barrier Compliance if your barrier passes. If your barrier doesn't pass first time, your first re-inspection within 60 days is included free. Additional re-inspections are $90. How booking works

The process is designed to be simple for a pool owner who just wants this handled properly and quickly:

1. Book online or by phone. Tell us your suburb and whether it's a pool or spa, and we'll confirm a time.
2. Inspection within 48 hours. An independent, BPC-registered inspector attends and assesses your full barrier on site.
3. Form 23 on the spot if you pass. Your certificate is issued the same day, ready to lodge with council.
4. We handle the reminders. Both the 30-day council lodgement deadline and your four-year renewal date are tracked for you.
